Stepping Into The Growth Zone |
|
April 28, 2009
Recently I found myself in a less physical moment of growth. Last week I was the master of ceremonies for Thailand's first ever Asian Bouldering Cup. The event was a huge success with athletes from Thailand, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei. I have spent a lot of time in front of crowds at climbing competitions. Usually, I find myself in the familiar position of having a Thai counterpart to bolster my Thai language skills and play on my English. In Krabi last week, I was asked to MC in Thai. I initially felt nervous and unfamiliar. The list of VIPs was intimidating. It included the governor of Krabi province, representatives from the Sport Authority of Thailand, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, heads of business associations, and of course mentors who I respect. The entire climbing community was there and I was a representative of Chiang Mai. The pressure was intense.
I thought back to familiar public speaking situations: Draw strength from the ground with a strong stance. Make eye contact with those watching. Speak to the people in the back of the room. Tell stories. Tell jokes and so many more. When the moment came, I stood in front of the crowd, drew strength from my legs and embraced the unknown territory. The result? The best performance I have ever given. I joked and cheered, I engaged the crowd, I taught about climbing, I encouraged and drew energy from the crowd. I did it all in Thai and gave the athletes all I could to help them in the event. It was powerful and my confidence speaking Thai has risen to a new level. Every day we are faced with potential moments for growth that are less than obvious. They come while we climb and speak in front of groups. Most importantly, they come while we interact with others and when we lead. Cultivating an awareness of those challenging moments is key to personal growth and key to developing those around us. I often speak of actively stepping into the Growth Zone. In climbing it is easy to recognize those moments. They typically come when we are above our last piece of protection, risking a fall in new terrain.
