Greetings all!
I'm Denali Barron, newest member of the CMRCA staff team. Shortly after my plane touched down in Chiang Mai, I found myself suspended in the maw of the most impressive cave I'd ever seen, 60 meters above solid ground. At the hanging transition point between Tyrolean Traverse and rappel, I shook hands with my boss for the first time. This initial impression was no exception to the rule: Now, after one week in Thailand, I know I couldn't have found a better place to work, play, and learn for the next year.
I have been deeply involved in outdoor education since my freshman year of college. At Princeton, I led week-long freshmen orientation trips, trained other undergraduates to lead freshmen trips, taught introductory kayaking courses, and served on the staff of the Princeton University Climbing Wall for three years. As a member of the Climbing Wall staff, I worked with climbers of all ages and skill levels, and gained outdoor experience leading day trips to nearby State Parks. During my senior year, I co-coordinated the University Climbing Wall with one other student. Beyond the safety, education, and maintenance duties of a regular staff member, I was responsible for developing new programs, selecting and training staff, planning events and competitions, and advertising.
In addition to my work within Princeton's outdoor program, I has extensive leadership and teaching experience. As an Assistant Naturalist at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies in Aspen, Colorado, I have taught hands-on science, history, and ecology day camps for children ages 6-12. As a trip leader for Wilderness Ventures, I have guided teenagers on outdoor trips around the American Northwest, helping them develop wilderness living skills, nurture their own leadership abilities, and foster an understanding of the natural world. I have been lucky enough to participate in backpacking, mountaineering, and adventure racing expeditions across the globe.
As Program Development Intern, I will eventually be involved in many tasks and activities at CMRCA, from maintaining the website blog to overseeing school programs to coordinating efforts to engage with the local community. In time I'll be setting up the same Tyrolean Traverse that welcomed me to Thailand! For now, I am focused on learning to speak Thai and living with my host family. I am delighted to be a part of the CMRCA community, and I can't wait to learn more about this remarkable community and place.
